ancient wood
An old painted bench
rust reflected
sun scorched ancient wood
I bought it twenty years ago
and painstakingly fumbled
constructed this ark
it was always misshapen
imperfect
like life and living
she criticized its appearance
not square, not level
but I always loved it
obsessively cared for it
painted and painted it
layer on layer
bought bolts and screws and firmed
its joints though it was always uneven
it was host to countless encounters
family and friends
drunken nights and festive days
it served and it stayed
made of the cheapest wood
it should have fallen apart years ago
but it stayed and I patched it
repaired the rotten places
gave it a coat of fresh red paint
it's endured better than us
we parted, it stayed
maybe love was the reason

Isn't life amazing- what you loved the best- gone with the wind- and then the junk is left- very good- very thought provoking-
